McLeodganj in One Day: A Simple Sightseeing Plan

A one-day McLeodganj and Dharamshala sightseeing plan: the Dalai Lama Temple, Bhagsu Nag, Dharamkot, St. John's church, Dal Lake and sunset at Naddi.

Gyuto Monastery at Sidhbari, below the Dhauladhar

McLeodganj is small, but its sights are spread across steep hillsides, and the roads between them are narrow. With a plan — and a driver who knows where to stop — one full day covers the highlights comfortably.

Morning: the Tsuglagkhang complex

Start at the Tsuglagkhang complex, the main temple of the Dalai Lama, with the Namgyal Monastery and the Tibet Museum next to it. Mornings are calm, monks gather in the courtyard, and the views over the Kangra valley are clear before the afternoon haze.

Allow about 1–1.5 hours. Walk back up through Temple Road to the main square for tea.

Late morning: Bhagsu Nag and the waterfall

A short drive (about 2 km) takes you to Bhagsu Nag, an old Shiva temple with a spring-fed pool. From the temple, a paved path leads up to the Bhagsu waterfall — roughly a 20–30 minute walk each way.

Bhagsu Road gets crowded by midday in peak season, so this is the stop to do before lunch.

Lunch: Dharamkot or the main square

Dharamkot, just above Bhagsu, is known for its cafés and quiet lanes; it is also the start of the Triund trek. The cafés around McLeodganj’s main square are the easier option if you are with elders.

Afternoon: St. John in the Wilderness and Dal Lake

Drive down through the deodar forest to St. John in the Wilderness, a stone church from the mid-1800s with stained-glass windows and a quiet old cemetery. From there, carry on to the small Dal Lake near Naddi.

Sunset: Naddi

End the day at Naddi, the best viewpoint in the area. The whole Dhauladhar range lights up at sunset, and on clear days you can see deep into the valley below.

Add lower Dharamshala if you have time

With an early start, you can also fit in:

  • HPCA Cricket Stadium, under the Dhauladhar.
  • War Memorial, in a pine forest near Kotwali Bazaar.
  • Norbulingka Institute at Sidhbari, for Tibetan art and gardens.
  • Gyuto Monastery, also at Sidhbari, with the mountains straight behind it.

Tips

  • Park and walk in McLeodganj — the main square and Bhagsu Road are one-way and tight.
  • The Innova Crysta handles the steep lanes to Dharamkot and Naddi best; the Swift Dzire is fine for couples.
  • Flying in? A full sightseeing day can start straight from Kangra Airport — see local sightseeing for the day fares.
