Dharamshala sits on the slope of the Dhauladhar range, and the town climbs steeply: Kotwali Bazaar and lower Dharamshala are noticeably warmer than McLeodganj, which is only about 5 km further up the hill. So when you go matters, and so does where you stay.
The short answer: March to June for warm days and long sightseeing, late September to November for the clearest mountain views, and December to February if you want snow on the peaks and quiet streets. July and August are the monsoon — green and beautiful, but very wet.
March to June: summer
This is the busiest season, and for good reason. Days are pleasant, the snow line is still visible on the Dhauladhar early in the season, and every road in the valley is open — Bir, Palampur, Dalhousie and Khajjiar are easy day trips or add-ons.
- Good for: families, first visits, the Triund trek, paragliding at Bir, combining Dharamshala with Dalhousie or Manali.
- Keep in mind: May and June are peak holiday months for travellers from the plains. McLeodganj’s narrow roads (Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Jogiwara Road) jam up in the afternoon, so start sightseeing early and book hotels in advance.
July to August: monsoon
Dharamshala is one of the rainiest places in Himachal. Rain can be heavy for days at a time, clouds often hide the mountains, and hill roads further afield can be blocked by landslides.
- Good for: quiet hotels, misty walks, temple trips in the Kangra valley — Chamunda, Brajeshwari, Jwalaji and Baglamukhi are all on main roads.
- Keep in mind: keep a spare day in your plan, avoid long high-altitude drives, and check road conditions before heading towards Manali or Chamba. Many of the Shravan month temple fairs fall in this season, so the Devi temples are crowded.
September to November: autumn
Once the rain clears, usually from late September, the air is washed clean and the Dhauladhar stands sharp against blue skies. For views, this is the best time of the year.
- Good for: photography, Naddi sunsets, Triund, paragliding season at Bir, and the Navratri yatras to the Devi temples.
- Keep in mind: Navratri brings big crowds to Chintpurni, Jwalaji and Chamunda — plan temple days with an early start. Nights in McLeodganj get cold by November; pack a warm layer.
December to February: winter
Winter is cold and clear. The peaks are white, and McLeodganj and Naddi can get snow on some days in January and February, while lower Dharamshala usually stays dry.
- Good for: snow views without a long drive, quiet monasteries and cafés, lower hotel prices.
- Keep in mind: mornings and nights are near freezing. After snowfall, the steep lanes above McLeodganj can be icy — an Innova Crysta with a local driver is the safer choice, and some guesthouses in Dharamkot are reachable only on foot. Flights into Kangra Airport can be delayed by weather, so do not plan a tight onward connection.
